Buyback
Buyback mean that a company buys back its own shares.
The purpose can be to have the shares for an incentive program for the staff, finance acquisitions where you pay with your own shares or simply cancel the shares. By canceling the shares, all shareholders get a larger percentage of the company and thus the profit, ratios such as earnings per share rise automatically.
Furthermore, buybacks can often have positive effects on a share's development because the demand for the purchase of shares increases in an “artificial” way.
Buyback shares can be either a complement or a substitute for transferring money to shareholders through e.g. cash dividends.
